We returned to Lake Erie East Point Cottages on South Bass Island. This time I brought a video camera after catching that 11 pounder in 1997. We stayed for 10 days. The boat ramp at Put In Bay was closed for repairs, so I had to drive to the south end of the Island to launch at the ramp at the state park, 7 miles away. I unpacked, launched my boat, started trolling right there and started catching Walleye right away. Then the bad weather moved in, wind and rain for 5 days.
I went out the next morning, made a 15 mile run north and only caught one 7# Walleye. After that is was sit at the cabin for days. One day we climbed to the top of Perry’s monument and the wind picked me up in the air and tried to throw me over the side. The attendant saw that and closed it down. That’s how windy it was.
Day afterday I waited for the wind and rain to stop. Finally on the day friends were to arrive to stay with us, the weather broke. I went out early, and I did find some big fish using crawler rigs. I came back about 9am and my buddy was fishing the dock. He was anxious to get out. I just laughed, we’ll see how long that lasts. We went out and he got sea sick so we came back in early.
The next morning it was windy again, but the sky was clear so I went out. I ran to Rattlesnake island, straight into the wind, then ran crossways to ride the waves to where I was going. I caught a 10# Walleye! And a few more. I went back to get my buddy but he was still sleeping. We did good every day for the rest of the week. Lots of big Walleye and Bass. I would be sure to come back the next year!
