5/15/26 About This Eagle

I have been watching this nest for a few years. There was another nest up river I was also watching. By watching I mean monitoring, just drifting by without stopping. The current by these nests was too strong to stop anyway and I found watching nests can be boring and one may not want to see what is brought back to the nests.

The nest up river was disturbed by people so much they moved to a new nest, that nest fell and so they came back to the one along the river. Someone kept harassing those eagles causing the nest to fail for 2 years and then the eagles gave up on that nest and now it too fell. So I extended my drift to check on this nest down river.

One day I noticed a red mark on trees by nest, so I got out and walked up to the nest tree and it too was marked. I ran into a logger and showed him the nest and they then decided not to log the area.

Since I have been watching this nest I have seen hundreds of geese and ducks with chicks in that area. Birds do that, they nest in colonies and protect each other’s chicks, even if that means sacrificing a few chicks to the eagles, but I never saw anything like that, they can catch chicks at will anywhere. Except this year, the chicks areĀ  missing. I think the wild spring weather killed caused nests to fail. So they have to go for fish, which are mostly large carp, which is dangerous.

While catching these large carp, the male eagle came up missing. The female, picture here, has been doing it all. She again has 3 chicks and they are full grown now and will fledge soon.

Last year and the start of this year, the female sleeps with eyes closed a lot. She naps when I drift by. Sometimes her head hangs down like a wet noodle. Last year she got sick and was down for 2 weeks and the male was feeding the 3 chicks. This year she looks good and has been doing well feeding the chicks. I am not seeing her with eyes closed as much as she keeps an eye out for fish.

In this photo I think she is looking at my little dog who is under my chair where its safe. When I run up river, he goes up front with nose in the wind. One day I looked over and that eagle was flying up river along side of us, pretty close. She was just sharing a moment of enjoyment with my little dog (a Chin), then she flared up and perched on the branch where they sit and watch me run by.

The nest in this location has a gravel bar in front with large rocks, so boats can’t get close. A new owner of the land lets their hunting dop run loose around the nest and causing the eagles to be stressed. That and the dump trucks slamming the boxes down to rattle gravel loose also causes stress. With all that chaos, they still use that nest which has been successful for years. If I see people walk in there an fish under the nest, I will let them know about the nest with eaglets in it and they usually respect the eagles by not returning. In all the nests I know of, most have been pushed out by land owners.

This year is the slowest year yet for wildlife. Everything is missing, or way down in numbers, not just the waterfowl. I think it is the weather, but poachers take their toll as well. Last year there was more waterfowl hunters around and that could be what happened to the geese and ducks. There are also guys who ride around running over wildlife for fun. That is why it’s important to keep an eye on the river.

6/15/26 Drift

I did get out to do a drift down the Rock River yesterday and I am still not seeing wildlife. There a lot of songbirds around, but seems many are missing. I did not see any wildlife at all. It was a wild spring with warm and cold spells and I think that hurt waterfowl and other mating.

The river almost flooded again. It rose quickly and dropped a foot already. The river is muddy. I have never seen so many pelicans on the Rock.

Rock River Drift 6/12/26

It finally cooled off and so I went out to do a drift. There seemed to be more songbirds around. I saw a lot of them, but missed getting photos. I did see several Indigo Buntings, warblers and Orioles. I heard a Green Heron call out. The 3 Eagle chicks are doing well, they look ready to fledge. The river is rising fast after all that rain.

Rock River Low Water

Our lower pool is rocky and shallow below Sterling Il. You need a jet drive on the lower pool around sterling when the river is at normal level or below, around 4000 fps is the line, below that and stay off the lower pool unless you have a jet drive like I do. But when the water is that low fishing is pretty slow anyways. Otherwise you have to know where the channel is further down river or on other pools.

They do need to dredge the Rock Falls ramp area. When using the river around here one needs to watch river levels closely. The Sinnissippi pool doesn’t change levels as much, but it needs to be up to get into any backwaters. If they would put a larger tube in at the bayou opening that would open up to small boats & kayaks and open a lot of new fishing waters. I think it can be done without being major.

Once you get below rt 30 bridge, there is deeper water, but there are some shallow rock areas to watch out for. Once you get up from the Nelson RR bridge, it’s deeper water all the way to the dam at Dixon. The pools above Dixon can also be shallow and rocky but most of the pools have deep enough water to get around. River GaugesĀ

June 3, 2026 Drift

I got out on the Rock, it was slow but it’s always fun to get out. There is female Bald Eagle that was all wet from fighting a large fish. The male isn’t hanging around much or I keep missing seeing him. Lots of chicks around now. Well not lots, there is only a few and there should be a lot. Wildlife is down about 90% in my estimates. A few baby squirrels around now.

I did see that Mink again I have been spotting. Cuckoo birds are around now, they have a distinct sound. The Kingfisher have been shy lately but I managed to sneak up on one, that was funny because they love playing hide and seek games.

I am almost caught up with photo archives. I just finished 2025 and checked and fixed other pages. The gallery I use is finicky.

5/26/26 Drift

I finally got out! I haven’t been out in over a week. It’s been cloudy and that spoils any photography. I stayed off for the holiday to avoid the crowds. I saw 2 Bucks first thing, They were disturbed by the celebrations at the lower dam, so they had a short night were out after sunrise.

After the deer I didn’t see much of anything. Every year gets slower and slower, not sure why. I saw one eagle to the nest at the end of my drift and got a photo. Then I did another drift and it wasn’t any better. I did see the male when I ran up river and got a photo of him.

When I got to the end, I didn’t see the eagle had moved up river and before I knew it I was pretty close and she took off after I passed. I continued on down and then here she comes back carrying a fish and I got some photos of that.

I have a new Website!

Do you have a website? A question that sunk in because I had no website at the time. I have always had websites to share my work, but they kept raising prices and limiting data. So, like with so many others, I relied on social media to share my work, which would be great if the images weren’t crushed and if the algorithms didn’t mess with posts.

If you post a photo for photographer friends to see, you don’t expect they will keep your images hidden and only show them if you jump through enough hoops. Hooks like having to spend an enormous amount of time in the platform, putting likes on other people’s photos, comments and shares. You don’t add enough key words? Oh we will hide all your posts for that. Post too much or too little and we will punish you. Do this do that and maybe they will let others see your posts, maybe not, it’s up to them.

There used to be a forum for photographers, but it was too much work and too expensive to host that many high quality photos so he closed it down. Now we have social media where we can post all we want to share with fellow photographers, but the images are severely compressed with colors flattened.

Building a new website is exactly what I needed. It gets me away from endless scrolling on social media (those cute puppy videos are addicting), but it keeps me working for myself and that feels good. It keeps my mind sharp and keeps me busy learning new things all the time.

Some social media sites show one row of medium size photos, taking an incredible amount of time to scroll down to the first image. Meta isn’t much better, you show a full page of small pics but even then the scrolling can take a far too long to keep an interest and forget trying to find something again. My new website should be organized in a manner where you can find a photo again. You can do easy accurate navigation (if I don’t make mistakes) to view every image I post, everything easy to search to return to a photo on a page. Each link in the drop down menu above goes to a directory for that year.

5/14/26 Drift Sleepy Eagle

I went out this morning finally and it was a decent day, worth the trouble. I made 2 drifts. It was a bright sunny day, not much for a golden hour with such clear smokeless air. That will change soon as we head into dry season. I used an R5II with an rf 100-500 lens.

This one eagle sleeps a lot. She did the same last year. She is pretty old, has successful nesting every year with 3 chicks most of the time. Also picture are a few songbirds, no wildlife at all. There has been a lot of people out on the river with the higher water levels, but I think it’s just going to be another slow year on the Rock River. If gas wasn’t so high I would switch rivers and make a longer drive.

I am watching another Belted Kingfisher nest, which is a hole in a river bank leading back to a den. This male has a Bluegill I think they get from nearby gravel pits. They seem to like to carry their catch around, I see this often. The woodies and geese are keeping their chicks hidden now. I think more are ready to drop from the holes in trees. I should be seeing more chicks soon. The wildlife is missing , not seeing anything except Squirrels, which were barking at something in one area, might have been a Redtail Hawk. I checked the Hawk nest today, it looked empty, but I couldn’t get a clear view.

The river continues to drop. The water clarity isn’t bad. I don’t fish the Rock much, fishing is terrible. That dam at Moline blocks fish from moving up river. The only fish are some Catfish and lots of Carp, including Asian Carp. If I fish, I don’t see anything and since fishing is so slow I much prefer to get photos.

Wildlife is getting used top me. This eagle doesn’t mind me going by at all. She closes her eyes and naps when I go by. It may be hawks that are keeping her up at night, I have been seeing an occasional hawk in the area.

Lots of new birds, like Killdeer, Sandpipers, Orioles and more. Most are too deep in the bush to see but I can hear them and see them cross the river.

I have added photos to my archives 2010 to 2017 is on now. In 2017 the amount of images increases greatly and there is more every year after the last. So it’s going to be a huge collection of Rock River Photos!

Rock River Drift 5/9/26

I did better today doing one drift, but it didn’t start out well with boats running around, but I started over and it went ok. I just missed getting a repeat of yesterdays Eagle dive but I was just one minute off in timing. I did time it right to catch a Red-tailed Hawk perched. He took off, landed down further, then took off again calling out.

Then I saw the Eagle in the same perch looking down. She dove before I was ready, again. She landed on a branch and only took it to the nest when the male showed up. Then he was calling out. I think she is older and more experienced than him. There are few goose chicks to get this year so far, so she is catching fish instead and he isn’t. I missed the dive but I did a get a decent nest shot. This was the female catching fish. I saw her take the fish to the nest when the male showed up.

I didn’t see much else, it’s going to be another slow year. I did find another Belted Kingfisher nest. Lots of song birds moved in but they are hidden in the bush. The river dropped another foot. It’s not too muddy. The river is at 7.2′. It will drop another 3′ and then maybe I can have some peace and quiet on the river because it’s too low to get around and not many boats will be going out in this area. And with the price of gas I am reluctant to make the drive to the big river.

I am using my R5II with an RF 100-500 lens. I am getting used to it and have the settings pretty close, but I am still missing some shots I would have gotten with the R5.

Bald Eagle Nest 5/8/2026

They said sunny at first, clouds moving in later. But it was cloudy early and sunny later. I didn’t see much, but you never know, I usually see something to make it worth it. I had one last chance before I called it quits with nothing to show for my troubles, the Eagle’s nest.

I saw a perched Eagle up from the nest looking down. I moved out to give some distance and then she took off and before I could get focus, she dove straight down and grabbed a fish! I couldn’t catch until she was flying away. Then she did a fly-around to show off the catch and then landed in the nest and started to feed her young. That’s when I got this photo. She has 3 chicks again as usual.

perched eagle in nest area took off, then did a quick dive and I lost him, and he grabbed a fish and I may have caught up with him then. So that was it, about the only photos for the day. It was a quiet day on the river, I could hear songbirds, but they stayed hidden nest building. I am still trying to get used to my new R5II and I am missing some shots, but I think it will pay off at some point.

Female Bald Eagle Feeding 3 Chicks in the nest high above the Rock River

Bald Eagle feeding chicks

The Rock River is dropping pretty fast, it’s at about 7′ where 4′ is normal. Normal makes it hard to get around in this area and drifting is much better then. With high water I drift too fast, can’t stop and no shore for birds and critters. There is a thick layer of mud everywhere from the flood. The water was clear, not muddy like last time out.

I had a huge Asian Carp try to jump in my boat, hitting me in the leg and splashing water all over me. It bounced back in. Those are invasive species and bad news for the most part as they take over. But their fry do feed other fish and it gives pelicans something to eat besides bass. They can be dangerous if you get hit while running the river and they mess the balance up for other fish.

My little dog Herbie went this morning. He is getting old and doesn’t go with me as much now. He does great in the boat and I think it helps having him with me, wildlife doesn’t feel threatened by him.
